1. What is the street food scene like in Prague?
Having visited other European countries like Spain and Italy that have a vibrant street food scene, it became abundantly clear during research that this is unfortunately not the case for one of our favourite central European cities, Prague.
Street food markets are not to be mistaken with farmer’s markets which are dotted all over the city. Don’t get me wrong, we love a farmer’s market with our favourite being Náplavka Farmers’ Market on the banks of the Vltava River. However, what you won’t find here are independent food traders offering cuisines from all over the world.
If you find yourself in the Old Town Square, you should also not confuse the food stands serving hot dogs and chips with the type of street food vendors we are talking about.
2. Manifesto Market Andêl
We went on a slightly chilly Thursday evening in October however, there were heaters which was highly welcomed. If you are to visit in the summer, you can sit in the open air with the option of sitting under the shelter if you want to avoid too much exposure from the sun. We found it to be a relaxing atmosphere with chilled vibes and ample seating which isn’t always the case at street food market establishments. Reviews have mentioned it can get quite loud but we personally think this is time dependent and where you choose to sit. You can reserve a table but we just turned up and found seating easily.
When we visit these kinds of markets, it’s an opportunity to try food from more than one vendor. This is made easy when you are given a buzzer after ordering so you are free to roam around, well, until you find your hand violently vibrating, an indication to go and collect your order.
Notable mentions are the Pork Tonkatsu Ramen from Taiko Ramen Bar and the Chicken Shish from FLAME by Antricote. Both bursting with flavour, beautifully presented and reasonably priced.
The cocktails were the star of the show! An excellent offering and boy were they strong, just how we like it!! It was so hard to choose so we ended up trying most of them, and they did not disappoint. The bartender was so friendly and just accentuated the incredible time we were already having.
What we LOVE about Manifesto Market Andêl is that it goes beyond offering street food. They adopt a blend of technology and sustainability practices which contribute to their future-proofing business model – huge props to entrepreneur and landscape architect Martin Barry.
They are one of the first sites in Europe to offer cashless and contactless payments. Just when we thought we couldn’t be more impressed, their markets are 100% powered by energy from renewable sources and don’t tolerate the use of plastic. Erm, wow?!
On our next trip to Prague, we’ll make an effort to ensure our travel dates coincide with their cool events! At the time of writing, they have got a Gay Pride week with a drag queen show and disco party. Also an ‘Xmas in July’ event with a Beatles tribute act and a live DJ Santa and his elves. Intriguing right?
